Seven hydrophones (underwater microphones)
monitor the underwater acoustic space near OrcaLab. This network of
listening stations enables the orcas to be followed as they move about
much of the area of Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound. The hydrophones
are monitored 24 hours/day throughout the year, and recordings of
orcas are made whenever they are vocal. The result is a data base
of around 1000 hours of recordings each year. OrcaLab's hydrophones
are the source of the sounds heard on the archive section of this
site, and are also the source of the sounds heard during the LIVE
season. |
