Tail slapping, as the words imply, refers to the act of slapping the water surface with the tail fin (flukes). Orcas are seen doing this in a variety of circumstances. It may be a type of signal or just an energetic antic. Sometimes it is a gentle, careful movement and at others a sudden, loud and forceful crash on the water's surface which creates a huge spray of water and a loud crack, sounding through the air and water alike. |
