Distinguishing Features

Individual orcas can be distinguished by the shape of their dorsal fin and the grey area just behind, known as the "saddle patch". Through the diligent work of numerous researchers, the ages and family relationships - particularly of resident orcas - are now known. Each orca is assigned an ID code as part of a classification system that indicates their family & pod composition.
