Warm and cold ocean currents merge in this region, continually churning up nutrients from the ocean floor. Plankton grows abundantly, around which fish gather to feed. These fish provide sustenance for seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises and other sea animals. Orcas reign at the zenith of the food chain. On shore, there is just as great a diversity of life: bears, wolves, cougars, deer, otters, squirrels and other small animals, sheltered by the vast temperate rain forests, range freely below. In the skies above, great bald eagles soar; and within the forest and at its edges, ravens, hummingbirds numerous songbirds, and great blue herons nest and rear their young; out over the water, seabirds throng.
